(Continued from chapter Three)

REGIONAL AND ANNUAL CONFERENCES

IN order to acquaint the people of God with the necessity of giving the gospel to Israel now, the Society has representatives who travel throughout the country holding regional conferences. In these, both prophetic and evangelistic messages are given. As occasion permits, expositions of the Word are delivered. This phase of the work has been greatly used and blessed of the Lord to the saving of many souls and the building up of the saints.

Our annual conference is held at Montrose, Pennsylvania. Under the special blessing of God the interest has grown from year to year. The 1937 meetings were the best that we have thus far had. The interest and attendance surpassed all previous gatherings. The annual conference is held the middle of August each year. Nationally known speakers appear on the program.

Every phase of Christian truth is taught by the different speakers. Some bring devotional messages whereas others deliver expositions. Prophetic and evangelistic sermons are likewise preached. Souls are saved and saints are edified.

BIBLICAL RESEARCH MONTHLY

IN order to acquaint the public with its work and to proclaim the principles for which it stands, the Society publishes a paper called Biblical Research Monthly (now enlarged). Much valuable information and Scripture expositions are to be found in its columns. The subscription price is $1.00 per year. Canada and Foreign $1.10. Single copy 10c.

LITERATURE FOR CHRISTIANS

WHILE its chief efforts are to present the truth to Israel, the Society feels led of the Lord to publish such literature as it deems necessary to acquaint the Gentile Christians with the Scriptural teaching concerning "Israel's Place in the Plan of God." This is done principally by the Jewish Evangelization Series.

THE SCRIPTURAL METHOD OF PROCEDURE

"But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

According to the instructions of our risen Lord, the disciples were to preach the gospel in Jerusalem--the place where they were--and next to proclaim it through Judaea. With this work accomplished, He commanded them to move up into Samaria, because that was the next logical step in the development of their world-program. From there they were to go forth to the uttermost parts of the earth. From these simple instructions we can see the order of procedure for today. Our home community, in the language of this passage, is our Jerusalem, where we are to begin work for the Master either among Jews or Gentiles. Having completed the task honestly and thoroughly, we are next to reach out into the territories adjacent and work them as thoroughly as possible. Like waves caused by some disturbance on the water which move into larger circles, so our efforts should continue extending to the regions beyond until this message of life has been given to all Israel throughout the world.

In order to make clear what I mean, let me illustrate it this way. Los Angeles, my home town, is my Jerusalem. My first responsibility is to the Jews with whom I live. Having done what I can for them, I am next to reach out to those in surrounding districts in the effort to get the gospel to them. Then I am to continue enlarging the circle of my labors along this line until the truth has been proclaimed to the Jews in the remotest corners of the earth. To make another application of this principle, we will say that there is some Christian living in a small town in which there are a few Jewish families. His first responsibility is to give the gospel to his nearest neighbors, then to do what he can in an effort to reach the Jews of his county, next his state, and finally to send it to the Jews in the uttermost parts of the earth. The literary method and the radio ministry together with the other means employed by the Biblical Research Society enable the Christian, no matter where he lives or what his station in life is, to follow out the Lord's program as outlined by Him in His farewell message.

SOWING THE SEED BROADCAST

IN our Lord's parable of the sower He stated that "the sower" cast the seed upon the wayside, the rocky land, among thorns, and in the good soil. But the fourth type of ground does not have the same fertility and productivity, for some of it yields thirty, some sixty, and some a hundredfold. From this teaching we see that the gospel is to be given, even to those who have no appreciation of it. This fact is set forth by the command to sow the seed on the wayside, which will be devoured by the birds. The Word falling on the stony ground does not produce fruit unto eternal life; neither does that lodging among the thorns. Nevertheless, one is to give the truth to all alike and leave the results with God. It is as necessary to preach the gospel to the atheist and unbeliever as it is to present it to those who have honest hearts, for it is a savor of life unto life and of death unto death (cf. II Cor. 2:15,16).

Much of the preaching in our churches falls on hearts represented by the wayside soil; nevertheless, we rightly continue to have it proclaimed from the pulpits. In fact, much of the Christian work so far as eternal, blessed results are concerned seems to be fruitless; regardless of this fact, we continue to engage in it. Much of the gospel preaching over the radio as far as visible, tangible results show is fruitless; however, we continue this ministry. Doubtless some of the books and tracts sent forth to the Jews are not read; despite this, we continue faithfully in doing this work of sowing the seed on the wayside, upon the rocks, and among the thorns, for we know that His Word shall not return unto Him void (Isa. 55:10,11).

In commanding to sow the seed on the soil in which it cannot possibly grow, the Lord is simply giving us a charge similar to the one laid upon Isaiah: "And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn again, and be healed" (Isa. 6:9,10).

In like manner He commissioned Ezekiel to proclaim His message to Israel. At the same time He informed the prophet that the preaching would not be heeded: "And he said unto me, Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel, and speak with my words unto them. For thou art not sent to a people of a strange speech and of a hard language, but to the house of Israel; not to many peoples of a strange speech and of a hard language, whose words thou canst not understand. Surely, if I sent thee to them, they would hearken unto thee. But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee; for they will not hearken unto me: for all the house of Israel are of a hard forehead and of a stiff heart" (Ezek. 3:4-7).

We may not understand fully why it is necessary to proclaim the truth to those who will not hear, but such is our Lord's command. Again, we see a somewhat similar situation in the instructions which God gave to Jeremiah: "Thus saith Jehovah: Stand in the court of Jehovah's house, and speak unto all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in Jehovah's house, all the words that I command thee to speak unto them; diminish not a word. It may be they will hearken, and turn every man from his evil way; that I may repent me of the evil which I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of their doings" (Jer. 26:2,3).

In view of the fact that God always required the preaching to be done regardless of whether or not the people received the message, we, though we desire to see immediate results in men's turning to God, must in obedience to the divine injunction press forward in this ministry to the house of Israel.

During the eight years of the Society's existence it has, in answer to believing prayer, published over 1,635,000 pieces of literature. This consists of books containing 362, 224, 128, and 48 pages, together with tracts and pamphlets, some of which are in eight different languages. Most of this vast amount of publications is for Jews and has already been sent out or is constantly flowing forth to world-Jewry.

We praise the Lord for permitting us to send forth this mighty volume of testimony and ask the reader to pray constantly that the Lord will use it in the salvation of many souls.

THE RESULTS

SEEING results from our labors is always encouraging. On the contrary, when one encounters opposition and there is little evidence of his accomplishing anything, he becomes disheartened. Naturally, therefore, one eagerly looks for fruit from his labors. All too frequently we are short-sighted and look for fruit too soon. It seems that the Christian world is plagued with the spirit which in the commercial world is called the get-rich-quick idea. On the other hand, we have a right to expect reasonable returns from our labors in the Lord's cause. Frequently I am asked by sincere, honest people to tell what results have come from our labors in the Jewish field. In answer to this question I call attention to some conversions now and the future world revival which will result from this great seed-sowing in Israel. Let us therefore thank God for the fruit we see at present and expect in the days to come.

AT THE PRESENT TIME

Trophies of Grace

Because of the nature of our work and the reticence of the Jew to let anyone know of his interest in Christian truth, it is most difficult for us to ascertain what are the real results of this type of work. Frequently here and there we learn of marvelous interest manifested by some who have received the literature. Every month we get letters from different parts of the world giving us information as to the reception accorded the literature, and now and then the good news that one of the Hebrew people has seen the truth and has taken his stand for the Lord. When everything is taken into consideration, we feel very greatly encouraged even from the standpoint of present results; and, when we compare the fruit of our efforts with those who are pursuing the same task but using different methods, we are greatly enheartened to push the work with all our might. It is, of course, a great delight to our hearts to hear of every Hebrew who learns of the Messiah through our efforts and who comes out definitely and takes his stand for Christ.

According to my information, a sufficient number of people have been interviewed or surveys have been made by the radio companies to justify them in claiming so many listeners. The data gathered reveals the fact that only one person out of several hundred ever writes to the station. According to this ascertained law of averages, they can quite accurately state that they have so many people who tune in to the programs. If we adopt a similar method of estimating the number of readers of the B.R.S. literature, we are emboldened to say that there are literally tens of thousands of Jews who are studying the messages. I see no reason for our not being able to make such an estimate based upon letters which we receive from Jews directly and from friends who have come personally in contact with them and who report to us that they are reading the literature. Many times I incidentally meet a Jew who informs me that he has received the books and has read them.

To date we have distributed three of the seven volumes which are expositions of the first three topics of our messianic program. The material found in these books is taken from the Old Testament Scriptures. The fourth volume likewise, from the nature of the case, is an exposition of those Scriptures which relate to the first appearance of King Messiah. Hence, the first four of the seven treatises expound the Old Testament Scriptures and prepare the way for the teaching of the fifth which shows that these predictions were fulfilled in the coming of Jesus of Nazareth and His sacrificial and atoning death upon the cross. Shortly the fourth volume will be released from the press. Since our testimony which has gone out thus far has been expounding the Old Testament prophecies and since the volume dealing with the life of Jesus has not yet appeared, it is illogical and unreasonable to expect a great ingathering of souls in the form of Hebrew converts. Notwithstanding the fact that our message has been solely from the Old Testament, the Lord has used it to date in bringing a number of souls to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and in preparing the minds and hearts of myriads of Jews who have received the literature for the testimony concerning Christ which will appear in the later volumes when published. Another great accomplishment that has been brought about by the seed-sowing thus far is the breaking down of prejudice against the truth and allaying to a certain degree the vicious spirit of anti-Semitism. Since there is such a bitter hatred against the Jewish people, one renders a genuine service to Christ if he only combats anti-Semitism and thus gains for the gospel message a favorable hearing on the part of Israel.

Someone may conclude that since we have been eight years in producing the first four volumes, the Jews will have to wait a very long time for the last three of the series. This will not be true, because 360 pages have been written on the fifth of the series and much of the research work has already been done. During the Society's existence I have had to travel from coast to coast, speaking from eight to nine months each year. Furthermore, my time has been consumed with the personal direction of the work and its many details in its beginning. Since, however, the great burden of starting a new organization and making it known is behind us, I wish to assure all interested friends that we may look forward to a speedy completion of the remaining books within a reasonable time.

Volumes four and five have been most technical and have required much more research work and hard labor than any of the others. As I worked on the fourth book of the
Messianic Series while abroad, I found much material which logically must appear in volume five, Messiah: His Historical Appearance. My research work in the libraries of Europe and travels throughout Palestine threw a great flood of light upon the various themes pertaining to Messiah. It will be much easier, therefore, to finish the fifth book. Nevertheless, it will be necessary for me to complete the research work in Palestine and in the European libraries in order to make it what it should be. The last two books of the set can be produced very easily and quickly. Therefore, we face the future with great expectation and hope. With confidence we continue the testimony to God's beloved people.

When we see that this limited and incomplete testimony has produced some fruit, we are encouraged most heartily to believe that when the full message goes forth in the form of the succeeding volumes, God will honor His Word and there will be a great ingathering of souls, since it shall not return unto Him void. Therefore, I ask on the part of the readers a careful consideration of the herculean task to which God has called us in the preparation of this full testimony and its going forth to the entire nation of Israel as God leads. (We are only one of many agencies which God has called into existence for the purpose of giving His truth to the chosen race. It is our desire to do what we can and to cooperate with all others in this great God-given, task.)

When the farmer plants his corn and sows his wheat and other crops, he does not expect to reap his harvest the next day or the following week. He knows that he must cultivate them and await the time of ingathering. The same principle, likewise, obtains in this great spiritual world-wide seed-sowing and the harvest to result therefrom.

The Lord willing, we are planning for a great campaign of tract distribution and personal work in a most densely settled Jewish section working in conjunction with the resident missionaries. By His grace we hope to put out hundreds of thousands of the tracts, which constitute our
Junior Messianic Series. I know the readers will constantly bring this matter before the Lord in earnest prayer.

The Biblical Research Society has over 120 branch groups in the United States and Canada which are reaching the Jews with our books in over 1000 cities. The large star on the western coast represents the homeoffice, while the small stars indicate the Head Distributing Branch at Harrisburg and the International Branch at Washington, D. C. Following are just a few facts typical of the work of the many branch groups through whose faithful cooperation practically one million Jews have received the gospel:

BRANCH AT SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS--oldest group--distributed more than 20,000 books reaching over 300 cities in Texas, also many cities of Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Old Mexico.

HEAD DISTRIBUTING BRANCH at Harrisburg, Pa.--cooperating with the other branches mailing on an average of from 600 to 6,000 books weekly.

INTERNATIONAL BRANCH at Washington, D. C.--reaches many foreign countries--concentrating on Africa at present, distributing the
God of Israel in Arabic to 2,000 Jews of Cairo, Egypt. Has reached Jews at Johannesburg, Bulawayo, Cape Town, and other cities.

TORONTO BRANCH in Ontario, Canada--In addition to distributing books to more than 40 cities in Canada this group has sent thousands of the
Messianic Series to leading Jews in more than twelve foreign countries, concentrating on Palestine.

BRANCH AT BROOKLYN, N.Y.-- composed of several working girls--have distributed 52,000 of
the God of Israel.

Only eternity will reveal the fruits of the unselfish devoted service of the men and women represented by these branch groups who labor as unto the Lord looking to Him alone for their reward.

Jewish Conversions and Reactions

From a Jew in Haifa, Palestine, to the Biblical Research Society Branch in Toronto:
Very dear Sirs:
The gift which you kindly granted me has duly reached its destination and been delivered to its (destinatior) addressee, whose surprise touched the highest pitch.

I could never have had the idea that I possessed some unknown friends in a country so far away as Canada, and who contributes daily to my salvation as the small volume they have sent me proves it. I am unable to find sufficient words for thanking you, but declare I will never forget your honorable Society to whom I shall recur should occasion present itself.

I read this precious book,
The God of Israel, which attracted me by its arguments and explanations. I shall read it again with the greatest care and most interested attention.
Believe me, Sirs, Yours very truly for ever.

From a Jewish Doctor in Rehovoth, Palestine:

Dear Sir:
I am very obliged to you for Mr. David L. Cooper's books which I read with my deepest interest, and I believe I shall criticise your work favorably. Therefore I beg you for circumstantial information on it and for supplying with detailed literature.
Most respectfully yours,

From a Jewish Theological Seminary:
Dear Sir:
I am in receipt of your letter of January 26th and a copy of your book:
The Eternal God Revealing Himself to Suffering Israel and to Lost Humanity. I thought that it would be most useful to the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and I have turned it over to them."
Very sincerely yours,

From a Jewish Publishing Company:
Dear Mr. Cooper:
A doctor friend of mine is in receipt of two of your interesting abridged editions on
Eternal God Revealing Himself and Messiah: His Nature and Person. Could I prevail upon you to forward me copies of these interesting works in return for which I would gladly give you some publicity in the columns of the Jewish Post. Too, if you could see your way clear, would it be possible to place me on your mailing list that I may receive all future publications issued by you.
Thanking you in anticipation, I am,
Sincerely yours,

From a Jewess in Pennsylvania:
My dear Dr. Cooper:
After reading the
God of Israel I am very interested in reading your set of Hebrew Messianic Series. I am 17 years of age and of Jewish nationality.
Yours truly,

From an outstanding Zionist in Palestine:
My dear Dr. Cooper:
I was delighted to receive your kind note of June 29th, which reached me with considerable delay. I was happy to learn of the good work you are doing to combat anti-Semitism and to testify to the spiritual purpose which underlies Our movement. It is good to know that we have such friends. May your noble efforts be blessed!
With kind regards to Mrs. Cooper and yourself,
Yours very sincerely,

From an interested Jew in New York:
Dear Sir:
During a speech given at a Public Square I was handed a leaflet
The Triune Nature of the God of Israel. After reading your articles, I found some interesting notes on the truth of God. At the end of the article, I noticed that you have prepared a series of books entitled the Messianic Series. You mention that these books are available free to the Hebrew people. Since I am of Hebrew parentage, I should appreciate it very much if you would kindly let me know how I can obtain copies of these books.
Hoping to hear from you as soon as possible, concerning this matter, I am,
Yours very truly,

From a Jew, addressing Dr. Cooper as "Rabbi":

Dear Sir:
Your book,
The Eternal God Revealing Himself to Suffering Israel and to Lost Humanity, was placed in my hands for perusal. I would congratulate you on the very clear way in which you have handled the subject of the "Atonement of Christ," as taken from the standpoint of a Jew. I hope to make use of some of your statements in my teaching in the future. I will send you money when I know the cost.
I remain,
Your obedient servant,

From a Jewish College Library:

We have received the copies of Dr. Cooper's books:
Messiah: His Redemptive Career and Messiah: His Nature and Person, and wish to thank you. These will be a valuable addition to our Library.

From the Librarian of a Reading Room in India:

The receipt of a copy of Dr. Cooper's publication
The Eternal God Revealing Himself to Suffering Israel and to Lost Humanity has afforded me very great pleasure, and I hasten to thank you for so kindly sending a copy.

From a cultured Jewess in New York who read Dr. Cooper's books:
Permit me to express my gratitude ...... I have received the two books. I would appreciate any other books by Dr. Cooper available.

From a Missionary:
Dear Dr. Cooper:
I was talking to a Mesopotamian Jew from Sourabaja, Java, whose brother is a rabbi of a Sefardic congregation in Los Angeles. We had met en route from China.
"Do you know Dr. Cooper?" he said.
Now, I was glad to admit that I did and acknowledged my debt of love to him as a Christian for writings that set forth the privilege and responsibility of the Church toward Israel.
"He is a great Jew--a rabbi," my friend continued.
I mildly interposed that I knew him as a Gentile Christian, whose life was devoted to the benefit of Israel--but to no avail.
"He is a Jew, and a deep scholar," he concluded, shaking his head with grave respect. His position forbade him to say more. But a mysterious twinkle in his eye betrayed a real interest in the choice messianic literature that had entered the household of his kindred.
Yours for the Salvation of Israel.

From a Missionary in South America:

Dear Dr. Cooper:
As soon as these books arrived I gave the copy of
The God of Israel in Judeo Espanol to a prominent Jewish business man with whom we have been dealing for the past year. He was as enthusiastic about it as a child with a new toy. He brought it out after he had read it and proceeded to tell me all about it. The only thing left him to support his rejection of the Messiah is the possibility that the Christian's translations may not be correct. To this he hangs for dear life. He frequently threatens to refer it to a rabbi in Buenos Aires who knows Hebrew or to learn Hebrew himself. Naturally I always encourage him to do this so that he can see for himself that we are not deceiving him. This attitude disarms him.
With greeting in the Name of the Lord,

From a Missionary in Africa:

Dear Mrs. Cooper:
Very many thanks for the splendid parcel of books which you sent me for my work among the Jews. At a recent meeting which I held and which was crowded with Jews, I put a lot of your books on my free table for Jews among other literature and not one was left. May the Lord continue to bless you and your husband in your work for Israel.
Yours very faithfully,

From a Jew to a Christian worker in Seattle, Wash.:
Dear Brother Cant:
Just a few lines to let you know I am enjoying good health and still believing in Him. The first time the two ladies came to the jail they gave me some books and little papers to read about Christ. When they came back the second time and asked me if I had read them, I told them, "Yes," but I had not. I threw them aside like as though they were poison as so many of the Jews would do. The second time they came they gave me one of your booklets entitled
The Deity of Israel. This I read over twice. Then I thought there must be something to it. I wrote to you, Mr. Cant, for more of the same literature and the more I read the more I believed and the more I wanted to read and the more I came to believe in the Holy Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I never thought the blood of a lamb or the putting my hand on his head would save me from sin, but now through the blood of Jesus Christ I am saved and I know now He died for you and for me.
