Waiting Upon God

"Give Ye Them To Eat …" (Luke 9:13)

CHICAGO'S HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of unsaved were hungering and thirsting for the bread and water of life. Our Lord bade us, "Give ye them to eat." These thousands of souls were a burden upon our hearts. But how could we in California get the bread of life to them in Chicago? We tried. We furnished the late Rev. Charles Meeker, head of the Chicago work at the time, ten thousand free copies of The God of Israel. We sent him 2,500 copies of Messiah: His Nature and Person free of cost. We also gave him hundreds of the book The Eternal God Revealing Himself to Suffering Israel and Lost Humanity. He gave out most of these books.

Later we began to pray that the Lord would raise up a secretary to type labels for names and addresses for Chicago. God answered this prayer "exceeding abundantly above all we could ask or think." He not only gave us a fine Christian girl for a secretary, but raised up a very fine Christian business man to pay her salary and furnish the office, equipment, labels, and other necessities. This man even assisted largely with the postage needed to mail out the books from our Harrisburg Distributing Branch. He had the labels made with carbon between the strips so that the secretary could type names for five different books at one time.

The first book in the Messianic Series,
The God of Israel, was sent to 45,000 families in Chicago. Then the abridged edition of Messiah: His Nature and Person was sent to them. A month or so later we mailed them the third book Messiah: His Redemptive Career, and, in another month, the abridged edition of Messiah: His First Coming Scheduled. Finally, a vast number of these families received What Men Must Believe, abridged.

We have received a number of interesting letters, telling some of the results of this broadcast seed-sowing of God's Word in the form of the Messianic Series. But we shall have to wait until "we know as we are fully known" before we shall really learn the eternal results. If we take into consideration the law of averages, which has indicated through scientific tests that any literature yields from one to five per cent in returns, we may assume that at least from one to five per cent of the souls reached by the literature will be rescued from a never-ending hell. Praise His Holy Name for this hope! Please pray that every honest-hearted person—Jew or Gentile—who received any of the books may open his mind to accept the truth of God's Word.

"Now faith is assurance of things hoped for,
a conviction of things not seen" (Heb. 11:1)

To furnish books enough for reaching 50,000 families in Chicago and also to continue supplying our many branch groups with books for their wide distribution, Dr. Cooper, by faith placed an order on the press for 400,000 books—100,000 each of the first four abridged editions in the Messianic Series. The printer gave him an estimate of over $26,000 as the cost of printing these. Dr. Cooper and I were in Oklahoma City at the time, where he was holding a week's radio conference. We knelt in our room and prayed very earnestly to determine whether it was His will for us to step out on faith and place an order for $26,000 worth of books at that time, knowing we had no funds on hand to pay for them. But had He not covenanted with us in the beginning of this work to supply our every need? Had He not dampened my fleece twice in indicating that He would finance the work? He gave us the vision of reaching these needy families in Chicago. His part was the supplying of every need. Our part was the executing of the task. Had He not, in answer to prayer, raised up the fine Christian secretary? Had He not done exceedingly above all we had asked by raising up the fine Christian business man to pay her salary and expenses? No, we could not doubt now nor falter.

So Dr. Cooper telephoned the order for 400,000 books. We kept praying and others prayed earnestly with us. In a little over a year's time the $26,000 was paid. Then Dr. Cooper took another step of faith and ordered 100,000 of the abridged edition of
What Men Must Believe or Gods Gracious Provision for Man, at a cost of another $10,000; for had not God-dampened the fleece, indicating that He would supply the need? And had He not given the $26,000? Men may fail us, but our all-sufficient Lord never fails!

All whose hearts were made willing sent in money until the bill was all paid. "And they came, everyone whose heart stirred him up, and everyone whom his spirit made him willing,
and brought Jehovah's offering" (Ex. 35:21b). One dear friend and his family sent in $4,000 in one check. The widows sent their mites. Others sent in their tithes and offerings. And all of these were obeying our Lord's injunction to "Lay not up for yourselves treasure upon the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth consume, and where thieves do not break through nor steal ..." (Matt. 6:19,20).

Placing Hebrew Bibles In The Colonies Of Israel

"Behold, the days come, saith the Lord Jehovah, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Jehovah (Amos 8:11).

Since 1937, when Dr. Cooper and I visited the colonies of Israel, I have prayed that in some manner God would enable us to place a Bible in Hebrew, containing both the Old and the New Testament, in the library of each colony in Israel. Over 700 colonies are already established. Upon investigation we found that none of the libraries of these colonies and settlements had Bibles containing the New Testament and that a great many of the libraries had no Bible at all.

After returning to America, I tried for months to interest some outstanding men who help in the wide distribution of the Scriptures to the Gentiles to put God's Word in the Hebrew language in these libraries. Those in power in the various organizations were not interested. I wrote letters, stating clearly the need, telling that many of these colonies and settlements had no Bible. I thought surely they would see the need as we saw it. I even wrote to an international Christian group that distributes Bibles. After waiting months without receiving a reply, I knew that the Lord did not intend this work for any of those organizations.

One day in our prayer group I told the ladies how I had prayed and worked to get the Bibles into these libraries. Every member of the group was greatly concerned, and we prayed that the Lord, would give the Biblical Research Society the money for this purpose, as no other organization seemed interested in distributing the Bibles to the libraries of these new settlements. That same day He gave us $50 for that special purpose, and we were greatly encouraged. Very soon we had received nearly $600 for the Bibles. But where were we going to get the Bibles? And who would place them in the colony libraries for us?

While praying about this problem, in the early morning hours, the Lord brought to my mind our friend Mr. C. of Palestine as the very man to have these Bibles distributed in the libraries. We knew him to be a deeply spiritual Christian man who loves Israel—and one in whom the leading Jews of Israel have the utmost confidence.

I was so very sure the Lord had spoken to me concerning this friend that I wrote to him and later cabled him $400 to purchase the Bibles. He replied that he would gladly undertake this service for the Lord in behalf of Israel. He later wrote us that he had to buy Hebrew Old Testaments and Hebrew New Testaments, remove the bindings, and have the two Testaments bound together. Through the help of some workers in Israel he placed the complete Bible in Hebrew in 150 of the settlement libraries and then continued to distribute them as fast as he could get them ready. He also wrote that the workers were having blessed opportunities while presenting the Bibles to the settlements for the libraries and that the Bibles were gladly received. Please pray that God's Holy Word in these Jewish colonies may bring great blessing to His people Israel.
